Undergraduate Route

This is what by many is seen as the 'traditional' route into teaching, whereby your degree studies are combined with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - see separate page for further details. The University/College will lead to a degree, usually BEd, BA or BSc, and to QTS.

Entry requirements vary depending on the University or College.

Full-time courses

Full-time courses last for three or four years and include
practical teaching experience in schools.
If you have already completed at least one years full-time higher education, you may be able to take a shortened, two-year course.

Part-time courses

There are a variety of part-time undergraduate courses available;across the country, the duration of the course is typically longer than for full-time courses.

Application

Applications for undergraduate courses are made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Please see their website for a full list of courses available nationally: http://www.ucas.com/ . Courses leading to QTS have course codes beginning with an "X" and can be found by searching for "QTS" in the Course Search section.

"If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job."
