Most postgraduate courses lead to a university award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) as well as to QTS.
Many people complete a degree and perhaps only years later decide to pursue a career in Teaching.
Postgraduate courses are offered through both Universities and Colleges, and by school-centred consortia (SCITTs). Most post-graduate courses lead to the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (see separate page for further information about this).
One-year full-time courses
Most postgraduate courses are one year, full-time academic courses which include regular 'teaching practice' which can be as much as 24 weeks in schools.
Two-year full-time courses
These longer courses as far less common, but give the aspiring teacher a longer period of time to build up expertise in a given subject area (or to enjoy student life!).
Part-time and Distance Learning courses
There are a number of these available including courses offered by the Open University.
Modular Postgraduate Provision
These courses are tailor-made, taking on board your individual circumstances, enabling you to follow an personalised training programme. This style of learning can be ideal for those who have family or existing work commitments as they cause minimal disruption to one's life.
Application
Application is mainly through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR). Application can also be made to some SCITTs. The GTTR website can be accessed at: http://www.gttr.ac.uk/
