What are the minimum entry requirements for teacher training?

  • GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above (or equivalent qualifications)
  • GCSE Science Grade C or above or equivalent (if born after 1 December 1979 and applying to teach at Primary level)
  • An undergraduate degree

In addition, all those applying for teacher training must:

  • Show that they can communicate effectively in both spoken and written English
  • Obtain the required CRB clearances if accepted
  • Meet the requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach

I've heard the GTP is very competitive. What can I do to increase my chances of being accepted?

  • If you are not already working regularly as a volunteer, parent helper or are being paid as a Teaching Assistant, we recommend that you visit local schools and undertake some classroom observation (a minimum of 5 days is recommended)
  • The GTP is aimed at mature career changers (although there is nolonger a minimum age limit). DRBs look for prior experience when selecting candidates - more experience will potentially increase your chances
  • Gain some understanding of educational issues: read the TES (see our links section for their website), look at the National Curriculum and other documents.
  • We strongly advise you to visit the TDA's website http://www.useyourheadteach.gov.uk/ where you can read their guidance in 'How to apply for the Graduate Teacher and Registered Teacher Programme in England and Wales'.

What are the differences between the GTP and PGCE?

  • The PGCE is a University-based course, while the GTP is employment based
  • The PGCE has college-based learning interspersed with teaching experiences of specific durations. The GTP is primarily schools based with release time for additional training
  • The PGCE carries an academic award as well as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The GTP awards QTS only. NB the GTP is not automatically recognised in Scotland.
  • There is one application process and deadline for PGCE candidates through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR). However GTP candidates must apply direct to a Designated Recommending Body (DRB), each of whom have different application deadlines and starting dates.

When will I be expected to start teaching?

  • For most GTP students, it is a gradual process. You will initially have the opportunity to observe good practice in the classroom, work with smaller groups and team-teach before undertaking taking full class responsibility.

What will I need to achieve to complete my Training?

  • Training has to comply with the requirements set out in the document 'Qualifying to Teach'. Trainees work towards meeting all of the Standards set out in the document 'Qualifying to Teach' (we recommed you access this document online and read it before making an application. Details and downloads available http://www.tda.gov.uk/
  • In addition to developing your teaching, you will also be expected to complete written assignments during your training - for both PGCE and GTP routes.

How much will I get paid?

  • GTP trainees are paid by schools on either the unqualified or qualified teaching scales. The current minimum salary (as of April 2007) is £14,751 or £18,552 for those in Inner London. Some schools do pay more - especially if you have some class responsibility.
